The hardest part of a military-to-civilian job search is rarely capability. It is translation. You did work that maps cleanly onto civilian roles, and you describe it in a vocabulary that hiring managers and applicant tracking systems do not read.
Fixing that is a specific, learnable skill, and it is worth more to your search than another certification.
Your MOS, rating, or AFSC is a personnel code, not a job description. Nobody outside the military knows what it means, and the automated systems screening your resume are matching against civilian terms.
Start from what you actually did day to day. Someone who managed a maintenance section did operations management, scheduling, inventory control, quality assurance, and personnel supervision. Those are the words that get matched. The code is not.
Military resumes chronically understate scale because in the military the scale was normal. Twenty-six years old with responsibility for forty people and eight figures of equipment is unremarkable in uniform and remarkable on paper.
Quantify everything: people supervised, budget or equipment value, throughput, uptime, error rate, training delivered. Numbers survive translation better than any other part of your experience because they mean the same thing in both languages.
Every acronym is a place a reader stops. Replace them with plain description, but do not flatten the accomplishment while you are at it. "Served as NCOIC" becomes "supervised a fourteen-person team responsible for the readiness of a forty-vehicle fleet," not "was a supervisor."
One useful test: hand your resume to someone with no military background and ask them to tell you what you did. Wherever they hesitate, rewrite.
Federal hiring and private-sector hiring want opposite documents. Federal resumes are long, detailed, and explicitly matched to announcement language, and veterans' preference applies. Private-sector resumes are short, outcome-focused, and scanned in seconds.
Trying to satisfy both with one document generally satisfies neither. Write the federal version once in full, then cut a private-sector version from it.
Security clearance, leadership under pressure, and reliability are genuine advantages in the civilian market. They are also claims every veteran makes, which makes them worth nothing stated abstractly.
Show them in specific situations with specific results instead of listing them as traits. A story about keeping a section functioning through a personnel shortage does more than the word "resilient" ever will.
