Terminal leave and permissive TDY are two of the most valuable and least explained benefits available at the end of a military career. Used well, they give you weeks of paid time to find housing, interview, and start a civilian job before you are actually out.
Used poorly, or approved late, they turn into forfeited leave and a scramble. The difference is mostly timing and paperwork.
Terminal leave is accrued leave you take immediately before your separation or retirement date. You remain on active duty during it, which means you continue to be paid, continue to accrue nothing further, and continue to hold your benefits and identification until the final date.
The alternative to taking it is selling back leave, which is subject to career limits and is paid at base pay only, without allowances. For most members the leave is worth meaningfully more taken than sold, because taken leave effectively pays your full compensation package while you job hunt.
Permissive temporary duty for transition purposes, sometimes called job hunting or house hunting permissive TDY, is authorized time away that does not draw down your leave balance. Availability, duration, and eligibility vary by service and by circumstance.
Because it is separate from leave, it can often be sequenced alongside terminal leave to extend your total runway. This sequencing is exactly the sort of thing your transition office and your admin section can confirm, and exactly the sort of thing nobody volunteers if you do not ask.
Terminal leave requires command approval, and approval interacts with out-processing appointments, final medical requirements, and unit manning. A request submitted late gets shortened by the calendar rather than denied outright.
Work backward from your separation date. Identify the last required appointment, then the leave you want, then the permissive TDY, then submit. Members who plan this at ninety days out generally get what they asked for; members who plan it at thirty days out generally do not.
Your balance on separation day is not your balance today. It reflects continued accrual, any use-or-lose deadlines that fall between now and then, and leave already scheduled. Members regularly plan around a number that will not exist by the time they need it.
Run the projection rather than estimating. Getting this wrong in either direction is costly: overestimate and your leave is cut short, underestimate and you forfeit days you could have used or sold.
During terminal leave you remain subject to military authority, retain your identification and base privileges, and keep your health coverage. You can generally begin civilian employment, though there are rules worth confirming for your situation, particularly around federal employment and any conflict-of-interest considerations.
The date that actually matters for TRICARE, base access, and your final pay statement is your separation date, not the day your leave begins. Get that date confirmed in writing from your admin office.
