Your separation physical (or the exam tied to a Benefits Delivery at Discharge claim) is the last time a military provider documents your health while you're still in the system. Conditions that aren't written down here are harder to connect to your service later, because the paper trail is thinner.

Go into that exam with your own list. Chronic pain, sleep issues, hearing changes, joint problems, anything you've mentioned to a corpsman or medic even informally — all of it belongs in your official record, not just in your memory. A VA-accredited representative can help you think through what to raise before the exam happens, not after.

Terminal leave lets you use accrued leave days as your out-processing period while technically still on active duty and still being paid. It's valuable, but it has rules: use-or-lose deadlines, unit approval, and interaction with your report-no-later-than date for a new job or school.

Get clarity in writing from your admin office on exactly which day you leave active duty status, since that date affects TRICARE, base access, and your final Leave and Earnings Statement. A financial professional or your installation's personal financial counselor can help you plan the gap between your last paycheck and your first civilian one.

TRICARE coverage for you and your dependents generally ends on your separation date, with a limited transitional program available depending on your circumstances. If you don't line up new coverage before that date, you can end up with a real gap.

Check your eligibility window for transitional health coverage, and separately check whether your new employer's insurance has a waiting period. If there's a gap either way, a benefits counselor can walk you through short-term options before you're stuck without coverage.

Your DD-214 is the single document nearly every VA benefit, hiring preference, and state veteran program will ask for. Errors in dates, characterization of service, or duty stations aren't just cosmetic; they can delay or block a claim years later.

Review a draft of your DD-214 with your personnel office while you're still on base and can get it corrected on the spot. Fixing it after separation means filing a formal request and waiting, sometimes for months.

• Character of service matches what you actually expect (Honorable, General, etc.)
• Dates of entry and separation are correct
• Awards and decorations are complete
• Narrative reason for separation is accurate
• MOS/AFSC/Rating and any specialty codes are listed correctly

Most of these steps have deadlines that start counting down well before your actual separation date, and some benefits (like certain VA claim options) are only available if you file while still in service. Working from a single timeline, rather than a stack of separate office checklists, is the difference between catching these windows and missing them.
