Most veterans file a claim for the condition that's obviously connected to their service: the knee they blew out on a training run, the back they threw out humping a ruck. Fewer veterans go back and file for what that original injury caused down the line. A bad knee changes how you walk, which stresses your hip and back. Chronic pain disrupts sleep and mood. These downstream effects have a name in the claims process, secondary conditions, and they're one of the most consistently underused strategies in VA disability claims.

The idea is straightforward: if a service-connected condition causes or aggravates a separate condition, that separate condition can potentially be service-connected too, even though it wasn't caused directly by your time in uniform.
