The MEB/PEB Process, Explained in Plain English

The MEB is the first step. It's a medical review, conducted by physicians, that asks one question: does your medical condition meet the retention standards for your branch of service? If it does, the case typically stops there and you continue serving. If it doesn't, your case gets referred to the Physical Evaluation Board.

Depending on the percentage and years of service, the outcome can be separation with severance pay or medical retirement with the benefits that come with military retirement status.

Many service members go through concurrent processing, allowing the VA to evaluate the same conditions for a VA disability rating around the same timeframe as the military's process, so the transition to VA benefits isn't a completely separate delay after separation.
