Filing a VA disability claim isn't complicated in concept: you're telling the VA what condition you have, connecting it to your service, and giving them evidence to support that connection. What trips people up is the order of operations and the amount of documentation the VA actually wants versus what feels like enough.

A nexus letter from a qualified medical provider, written to address this specific legal standard, carries real weight. Generic medical records that only describe the condition, without addressing the service connection, usually don't do the job on their own.
Most veterans file directly through VA.gov, uploading evidence as part of the application. You can file each condition as part of one combined claim or file conditions separately; combining related conditions into a single claim can sometimes move faster, but it depends on your situation.
Before submitting, a VA-accredited representative, such as a Veterans Service Officer, can review your packet and flag gaps. This review is free and can catch missing evidence before it costs you months in processing time.
Once submitted, your claim moves through several stages, including a Compensation & Pension exam in most cases. Respond to any VA requests for additional information as fast as you can; missed deadlines are one of the most common (and most avoidable) reasons claims stall.
If your claim is denied or rated lower than expected, that's not the end of the process. You have formal appeal options, and many veterans successfully get a decision revised on appeal with better evidence or a corrected legal argument.
