How Long Does a VA Claim Really Take? Understanding the Timeline

Every VA disability claim moves through roughly the same sequence, even though the time spent at each stage varies enormously from claim to claim:

• Claim received and logged into the system
• Initial review to confirm the claim is ready to proceed and identify what evidence is still needed
• Evidence gathering — requesting military and medical records, and scheduling a Compensation & Pension (C&P) exam if one is required
• Review of all submitted evidence against the rating criteria for each claimed condition
• Rating decision prepared and the compensation percentage determined
• Decision finalized and notification sent to the veteran

The single biggest factor is how complete the evidence is when the claim is filed. A claim submitted with full military and medical records, a nexus letter where relevant, and lay statements already attached moves through evidence gathering far faster than one where the VA has to request records from multiple sources and wait for responses. The number of conditions claimed matters too — a claim for one condition typically moves faster than a claim bundling ten, simply because each one has to be individually reviewed against its own rating criteria.

Whether a C&P exam is required adds another variable, since it depends on a third-party scheduler's availability and the veteran actually attending the appointment. And the type of claim matters: an original claim, a supplemental claim with new evidence, and an appeal all move through different tracks with different rules.
