Veterans receiving VA compensation for a service-connected disability are generally exempt from the funding fee entirely. So are certain other categories, including some surviving spouses. This exemption can be worth thousands of dollars on a single transaction.
The exemption is not always applied automatically, particularly if a claim was still pending at the time of closing. If you closed on a VA loan and were later awarded compensation with an effective date that preceded your closing, a refund of the fee may be available. This is one of the more commonly missed refunds in the entire benefits system.
