Military pay is predictable in a way civilian income often isn't. Base pay, BAH, and BAS arrive on a schedule, and even deployment or PCS pay changes are known well in advance. Civilian income doesn't work that way: paychecks can be irregular, benefits enrollment has waiting periods, and job loss doesn't come with the kind of notice service members are used to.

An emergency fund sized for civilian life after transition needs to account for risks that simply didn't exist on active duty. A generic rule of thumb is a starting point, not a finished plan.
