Tuition Assistance vs. Saving Your GI Bill

Tuition Assistance covers tuition up to service-specific caps while you are on active duty and already receiving pay and allowances. It does not add a housing payment, because you already have one.

The GI Bill, used after separation, can pay tuition and a monthly housing allowance based on the school's location and your enrollment. For a veteran attending school full time, that allowance is often the difference between studying and working two jobs while studying. Burning GI Bill months on classes that Tuition Assistance would have covered for free spends that allowance for nothing.

For most members the sound order is simple: use Tuition Assistance aggressively while serving, and preserve GI Bill months for after. Knock out general education requirements, certifications, and as much of a degree as your schedule allows while someone else is paying tuition and your housing is already covered.

Then enter school after separation with GI Bill entitlement intact, fewer credits remaining, and a housing allowance covering the period when you have no military paycheck. That is the version of this that works.

There are real exceptions. Some programs are not eligible for Tuition Assistance. Operational tempo may make coursework impossible during certain assignments. Certain graduate or flight programs have costs that exceed Tuition Assistance caps by enough that the comparison changes.

There is also the transferability question. If you intend to transfer entitlement to a spouse or child, the service obligation attached to that transfer has to be started while you are still serving, which makes it a career-timing decision rather than an education one.

• A program that only exists at a school you cannot attend while serving

Before paying for anything, find out what your service already earned you. Military training and occupational experience frequently translate into transferable credit, and testing programs let you convert existing knowledge into credit at minimal cost.

Every credit you get this way is a credit you do not spend Tuition Assistance or GI Bill months on. Members routinely discover they were a semester further along than they thought.

The benefit is only as good as where you spend it. Accreditation, credit transferability, and actual graduate outcomes matter more than marketing aimed at service members.

The specific question worth asking any school is what happens to your credits if you have to move mid-program, because you probably will. A school that handles that well is worth more than one offering a slightly better rate.
