TRICARE is not one plan. It is a family of plans with different costs, different rules about referrals, and different networks, and the right one depends on where you live, your sponsor's status, and how your family actually uses health care.
Most families default into whatever they were enrolled in first and never revisit it. That is fine until a move, a birth, a separation, or a chronic diagnosis changes the math.
The central choice across TRICARE options is between a managed-care model, where you have an assigned primary care manager and generally need referrals for specialty care, and a more flexible model where you can see authorized providers with fewer gatekeeping steps but pay more out of pocket.
Neither is universally better. Managed care usually costs less and works well when you live near a military treatment facility and your needs are routine. The flexible option earns its cost when you live far from a base, want to keep an established specialist, or need care that referral queues would delay.
Proximity to a military treatment facility is the single biggest practical variable. Families stationed near a well-staffed hospital often get excellent care at minimal cost through the managed option. Families in remote assignments or in areas with thin network coverage frequently find the same plan frustrating.
Network adequacy also varies by specialty, not just by region. An area may have plenty of family practice coverage and almost no pediatric specialty care. That distinction matters more than the regional map suggests.
TRICARE enrollment generally locks for the year outside of an open season, with exceptions for qualifying life events such as a permanent change of station, marriage, birth or adoption, or a change in the sponsor's status.
Those windows are finite. A move is the natural moment to reassess whether your current plan still fits, and it is also one of the few times you can change without waiting. Treat the PCS as a health care decision point, not only a logistics one.
Adult children lose standard dependent coverage at a set age, with a separate premium-based option available afterward up to a later age limit. That transition does not happen on its own, and families regularly discover the gap after a claim is denied.
Put the date on a calendar years in advance. If the young adult has employer coverage available, compare it honestly rather than assuming the military option is automatically cheaper at that stage.
Coverage for active-duty families and coverage for retiree families are not the same product. Retirees generally pay enrollment fees and higher cost shares, and separating members who are not retiring face a much shorter transitional window.
The practical rule is to know your exact coverage end date and have the next plan lined up before it arrives, whether that is a retiree TRICARE option, an employer plan, or something purchased on your own.
