The Blended Retirement System replaced High-3 as the default military retirement plan in 2018, and the two systems work differently enough that comparing them isn't just a matter of finding one number. High-3 pays a larger pension but only to those who serve a full career; BRS pays a smaller pension but gives everyone, including those who leave before 20 years, something to show for their service through the Thrift Savings Plan.

Who ended up under which system was determined at the time of the transition, and for most people that choice is already made. What's still useful is understanding how the two systems actually compare, and how to make good decisions within whichever one applies to you.
